The Joy of Simple Cooking
I enjoy taking care of my body by eating healthy foods. It has been a great learning experience that I continue working on every day. Having been raised in a home with a mother who loved to cook and bake and a Grandmother who owned her own restaurant, we learned to love many foods of many kinds, some good for us, some not so good for us. But I did learn how to cook foods not in a box, but made from scratch.
My actions of discipline and care for my body support my high self-worth. I am a person in the midst of amazing and lasting change! I now take control of food. Overeating is no longer a part of the TRUE ME. Even though I do splurge once in a while.
More than ever, people are realizing that what they eat does make a difference, not only in the way they look and feel but also in the length and quality of their lives. If you are like most people, you are confused by the conflicting headlines proclaiming that what was "in" yesterday is "out" today.
Are organic foods really more nutritious than conventionally grown ones? Are eggs on the safe list? Can eating lots of fruits and vegetables lower your risk of cancer?
Cooking and eating healthful foods do not need to be complicated or dull, it can be a pleasurable experience, made even more so by knowledge and understanding.
I have heard it said that "eating is a necessity, but cooking is an art." Cooking is an art of preparing food for the table. Cooking should be to render food more digestible. Poor cooking often renders food less digestible and often results in digestive disturbances, headaches, and other ills and may even be the cause of a craving for strong drink and tobacco.
Many girls have grown up to dislike cooking because they have never been taught. They now have fast foods to feed their families. YUK!
It is said that in order to be a success in any line of work, one must first be a success in one's own body. Which means he must be a master of himself. Practice makes perfect.
Cooking is the process of preparing food by applying heat, selecting, measuring and combining of ingredients in an ordered procedure for producing safe and edible food. The process encompasses a vast range of methods, tools and combinations of ingredients to alter the flavor, appearance, texture, or digestibility of food.
Cooking is a science, the idea that a really proficient cook need not measure his/her ingredients is passing away. There are some simple things that may be made without taking the time to measure exactly, but in the making of other than the simple things, cooks have depended on luck, which is the natural result of their good or bad work.
The materials used in cooking are governed by the laws of nature, physical and chemical, which are God's laws, and God has so arranged it that under the same conditions the same laws operate uniformly, therefore, we can be sure that desired results will always follow accurate work. Which means that if we have a good recipe and follow it exactly, we will get the same results every time.
Applying heat to food usually, though not always, chemically transforms it, thus changing its flavor, texture, consistency, appearance, and nutritional properties. |
